Smartphone Prospects

1. Widespread of new mobile services based on LBS and SNS

The widespread of the Smartphones will bring the expansion of various new services specialized in mobile environment and the features of the smartphones. Among them, SNS and LBS are the areas that web service providers, such as the portals, can easily enter based on the existing user population and service capabilities. Business SNS(Social Networking Service) such as LinkNow and WhosLine which provide personal connections management, recruiting services, and job postings etc.
‘FourSquare’, which combines SNS and LBS(Location Based Service) to tell friends about what they are doing and where, is popular in markets abroad. A search combining LBS also appeared. ‘What’s Nearby?’ provides user experience that is different from wired internet by showing shops that are close by on Google Map on the Android phones. It will be interesting to see what kind of services the domestic companies will provide to compete against the famous foreign SNS and LBS services, and also, what kind of hit applications will appear during this process.

2. Intensified subsidies competition for devices such as the smartphones

The subsidies competition stirred by the release of iPhone is large enough to put the manufacturers under pressure and is threatening telecommunication companies’ next year bottom line. Furthermore, precipitation of another subsidies competition is anticipated in the first half of 2010 when the subscribers who have completed compulsory subscription contract (1~2 years) are poured out into the market.

3. Competition between iPhone and Android phone

The current market share of iPhone is higher than that of Android phone in the worldwide Smartphone market. However, Android phone is expected to chase iPhone with a much higher growth rate. The biggest grounds for supporting the continued growth of iPhone are that there are many
applications already developed, and the development of applications is easy due to the unitary specification. On the other hand, the reasons for expecting a rapid spread of Android phone are because it is adopted by many device manufacturers and mobile carriers as it is easy to customize and that it is open source, thus free of charge. Another reason is its universal use which means it can be applied to other industries such as automobiles, TV, and refrigerators. In 2010, not just the major device manufacturers such as Motorola, HTC, Samsung, and LG, but also the minor vendors have a high possibility of releasing Android phones. Therefore, Android is expected to overwhelm iPhone in terms of the number of models.
