Why do Apple devices keep a log of your location? And why didn’t they tell you?

According to recent reports published in differents media, for example in “The guardian” a British’s newspaper; and public denounces in the Congress of EEUU, Apple devices keep a record of where you have been using them. In addition to the violation of privacy and the risk posed if your iPhone or iPad falls into the wrong hands, are there other uses that might result from this knowledge?

This process is nothing new and is used by other portable devices like Google Android. In fact, data collection is necessary for some applications of geo-location as maps and even others such as

The application that shows locations near yours is not new, as with the navigators Gps. However, what is new is the permanent storage of information. Allegedly, Appel stores all information in the data base “consolidated.db”

iPhone Tracker is also a protagonist in this subject, this is  software that allows users to create maps with the coordinates of their movements.
The researchers reported that the both iPhone and iPad collect information from cell towers and WiFi access points every 12 hours and the data is stored on the devices and computer with which they synchronize.

This controversy has increased the suspicions regarding Google’s smartphones, which are based on the Android technology, they are fitted, presumably, with that service. The tracking problem with Apple devices, unlike Android, is the displayof permanent data which could fall into the wrong hands and may represent a risk.

Another use that may have this track is that the police use the records for criminal investigations. In the case they could determine the location of the suspects at the time of the crime to prove their responsibility; however other sensitive information may be disclosed, according to Wired.com.

Apple tracking devices represents potential risks that the company must explain and resolve in order to keep the benefits their applications give to the users. The company has announced that in the near future will release a software update for the iPhone and iPad to avoid storing location data. It is intended that the geodata be kept for seven days and then be eliminated.
